The Week of June 8, 2020 — Death, Winds, the Pandemic Condinues, Tributes to George Floyd, and the Work Continues in and Around the Towers of Healing

A Note About the Featured Image: At the corner of Barton Road and Anderson Street, I instinctively took out my iPhone to capture the 6 AM shadows around the Towers of Healing. I was heading home after spending the night with my critically ill mother, who lay at the intersection of life and death in a local care center. For reasons known only to her God, she tarried, she lingered, O, she waited at that intersection before going gently “into that good night.” I learned later that in a matter of minutes after passing the intersection at Barton Road and Anderson Street, our little mother fell asleep in the arms of her Saviour.

For Monday, June 8, 2020, the meteorologists predicted high winds for Southern California including the Inland Empire. Their warnings were spot on. The winds were so strong at the site, Tower Glass was unable to install windows at the Galleria.

The COVID-19 Virus pandemic continues, however, the stay at home orders have been relaxed in varying degrees based county jurisdictions. The laborers at the construction site continue to follow, as much as possible, social distancing and they do their best to wear mask at all times.

COVID – 19 UPDATE

The COVID-19 Stats as of June 11, 2020.

The East Yard Parking Lot Retaining Wall — Update

The back side of the retaining wall is being waterproofed.

The Galleria Window Installation — Update

Today Was the Day That Technology Took the Upper Hand and Delayed the Installation Process

Upon arriving in the north yard, I delighted to see the window panels installed beyond the main entrance door. I was somewhat puzzled when I saw the missing window window panel in the upper east corner. I later learned that the window was cracked and will replaced.
With the suction cups being attached to the window panel, so I thought, I waited, and waited to take capture the window being set. I waited and waited some more…but window panel stayed put.
As I waited, the glazers continued pull and tug at the window frame as they attempted to attach the suction cups. I continued to wait, and wait, but the window stayed put. I decided to continue on my rounds.
After making my rounds, I returned to where the glazzers were working on the glass panel, the were still huddled around the vacuum lifter. Somewhere there was leak in the vacuum line.

The Galleria Radiant Heating and Cooling System — Update

A view of the radiant flooring tubes that will provide recirculating thermal comfort and can be used with the HVAC system.

Schuman Pavilion Pedestrian Bridge — Update

Work continues in the bridge with pipe fitters and electricians doing their thing. Note the helicopter’s reflection in the lower left corner of the bridge.

The Former Children’s Hospital Entrance — Update

Just to the right of the excavator is the former entrance to the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. The first coat of waterproof spackling compound has been applied and is drying. The trench is being dug for irrigation pipes.

An Ambulance Enclosure

The footings for an ambulance fence/screen on the south side are being excavated. It is my understanding that when an ambulance comes into the emergency room, they will drive into this screened-off area to offload the patient. This area allows for the privacy of the patient. There will be a decontamination shower room in a corner of the space.

The Southwest Exterior Stair Enclosure

There are four (4) exterior enclosures that will provide access via stairs to levels “A” and “B.” The two (2) access stairs located in the south yard that lead directly to level “B” as well as the stairs in this enclosure. The stairs on the northeast corner (on the east side of the Galleria) will give access to levels “A” and “B.”

The southwest stairwell to level “B” was the first of the four stairwell to be enclosed with water resistant wallboard.

The Emergency Generator — Update

With the roof installed, the painting crew begins to paint the room. The wooden forms in the electrical vault at the left, running in front of the control units, are being removed.
A look into the electrical vault. The wood forms are being removed.
At the rear of the Generator Plant, work has begun preparing the tanks and pipes for fuel. It is understanding that the tanks will be filled in early July.

Loose Ends: This and That Around the Campus

Along Anderson Street a retaining wall and sidewalk were added, completing the sidewalk access all the way around the hill.

Still doesn’t look like the glazzers are back.
