A Temporary Hospital Drive Reroute and Turnaround Realignment *Completed*

In 2016, to make way for the construction of the new hospital buildings, the Anderson Street main entrance to the Loma Linda University Medical Center was closed and permanently rerouted via Prospect Avenue. After nearly a year, it is necessary to temporarily reroute the turnaround at the front of the Medical Center to provide room for heavy equipment access and a base for a tower crane. In early March, temporary construction barriers were put up to secure the site for the laborers to begin clearing and preparing the project area. 🔨

Fence Going UpBy March 13, 2017, fencing had been placed around the greenbelt—a number of handicap and valet parking spaces that would be affected by the temporary closure and detour. A section of the planter in the center of the hairpin loop was also fenced off. 🔨

By March 16, 2017, the sod and top soil from the greenbelt had been removed and the parking spaces that must give way for the temporary detour is in the process of being broken up and trucked away. Surveyors are on site to stake out the new route. 🔨

The following day the laborers were laying water pipe and beginning to grade the site. 🔨

After 9:00 p.m. Sunday night (March 19), the drive to the Medical Center was closed so that paving could be done before Monday morning. 🔨

By the end of Tuesday, March 21, 2017, the temporary detour site had been covered with plastic in anticipation for a rain storm that would pass through overnight. 🔨

The temporary drive and turnaround must be completed by Saturday, March 25, 2017, to be ready for the ten-hour concrete pour beginning at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday night. The cement trucks will be using a portion of the vacated drive during the foundation pours. After the foundation is poured the soil in the vacated section will be excavated and compacted in order to support the weight of the crane, which will be positioned at grade on the north side of the construction pit. 🔨

where are the tower cranes to be placed?

      • Dennis E. Park, MA

Thank you for your question. Refer to the most recent post “The Tower Cranes.” The south tower crane will be located on the other side of the construction pit, approximately opposite of the north tower crane.
