The Week of October 15, 2018 — Wind, Bolts, Welding, and a Little Fog

Week 126 Blog —

As Chronicled From Over 2,000 Miles From the Construction Site.

Before WC and LS (webcams and live streaming) it was nigh-on-impossible for a photo journalist to continue reporting on a story thousands of miles away from the story-telling location. This week, I was required to be 2,000 plus miles away from Loma Linda, but thanks to Loma Linda University, I was able to access their eight webcams (http://webcams.llumc.edu/) and watch the construction in realtime. Occasionally, I would take selected screen shots and enhance the photos, through photoshop, and weave them into this weeks blog as a permanent record for the week.

On Wednesday, October 17, 2018, some fog was in the air around the site as the crew arrived for work.

The Children’s Hospital Tower —

The Sign Off on the Welding and Bolting

In this cropped photo, the Children’s Hospital tower stands alone symbolizing a major milestone that occurred this week: The steel inspectors signed off on the welding and bolting of the Children’s Hospital tower. With the sign off Schuff Steel Company turned the structure over to McCarthy, the general contractor, to begin the interior construction phase of the process.

The Morphing of the 13th and 14th Floors 

The west side of the Elevator Tower: This is how the 13th and 14th floors appeared on Wednesday, October 17, 2018. From the west the ironworkers are pushing toward the elevator towers.

The west side of the Elevator Tower: On the 18th of October, 2018, the bays of the 13th and 14th floors reached columns of the elevator tower.

The west side of the Elevator Tower: By Friday afternoon, October 19, 2018, the iron for the 13th and 14th floors had be set (columns) and hung (girders and infill beams) up to and including the west half of the elevator tower. During the week of October 22, decking will be scattered on the 13th and 14th floors while the ironworkers continue to push toward completing the east end of the building.

Early Morning Profiles — Friday, October 19, 2018

In this south elevation photograph, the 13th and 14th floors are clearly visible on the west side of the structure.

Due to the close range, height, and angle to the east elevation, the iron for 13th and 14th floors are not yet in sight.
