The Schuman Pavilion Pedestrian Bridge

The Schuman Pavilion Pedestrian Bridge

On the June 21, 2018, “News of the Week” Homepage there was an important notice informing the campus employees that “[t]he valet ADA parking lot, located in front of the Schuman Pavilion, will close in July for construction of the Campus Transformation Project’s Schuman Bridge. This closure will be in place from July 2, 2018-Nov. 23, 2020.”

The above image is from the June 21, 2018, announcement, which provides an aerial view of the construction area.

The Schuman Bridge will be one of three pedestrian bridges that will ultimately be constructed to connect the podium of the new hospitals to the existing hospital structure. On the west side, a pedestrian bridge will be built between the new podium and the existing Children’s Hospital. A pedestrian bridge will connect Public Parking Structure P4 south of Barton Road to the pedestrian bridge that links the podium of the new hospital towers to the existing Children’s Hospital.

What a difference approximately ten months make. This image is an aerial view of the same location portrayed in the June 21 2018, notice. High above the site, the helipad on top of the west wing of the new Adult Hospital tower is visible. Two of the Medical Center’s cloverleaf towers are dwarfed by the Adult Hospital tower. Now that the pit has reached the sub-grade level, the next phase in constructing the tower will soon begin.

There is a whole lot of dirt being excavated near the schuman pavilion. How deep are they going. I am assuming this is for the new elevator and pedestrian walkway from the old to the new.

Yes, they are still excavating the site where the Schuman elevator tower will connect to the pedestrian walkway. They have gone down two stories from grade. They have another story to go on the south side of the pit. The north side will be a little less than 3 stories. As they excavate, they shore up the walls with shotcrete.
