The Week of May 13, 2019 — Windows, Gravel, Caissons, a Scaffold, Restrooms, and an Elevator Pit

This week we pretty much begin where we left off last week: just more of the same — a little of this and more of that. Who knows where we will end the week. As I arrived on site today, May 14, 2019, the crane was lowering a pallet of windows on to the roof of the podium east of the elevator tower. After sundown, the window installers will use the area as the staging area where the individual sections of glass will be lifted into place.

By 10 AM work was well underway on the west side of the podium in the corridor between the existing Medical Center and the new structure. A telescopic crane (lower right) was being used to lower the 60-foot caissons into the predrilled holes.

They are in the process of building the tunnel. Please refer to my posts on the tunnel trench, which illustrates the extensive preparation that must go into shoring the pipes before excavation can continue. The are pilaster footings that have been poured that will support the pedestrian bridges. They will begin on the bridges after the tunnel has been completed.
