The Week of August 5, 2019 –Was the Week of Reflection and the Week the South Lift and Scaffolding Came Down

This is the week that two major changes took place that would change the appearance of the exterior of the two hospitals. The first change began the Friday before when the glazers (aka window installers) began installing the recessed glass panels on the 16th-floor terrace. Only one glass panel had been installed and with the new week, the glazers looked forward to making progress toward completion. The featured photo shows the valley and the San Bernardino mountains beyond as reflected in the 16th-floor windows.

The second major exterior change would take place on the south exterior of the Children’s Hospital tower. The aerial liftwhich would he south elevation of the Children’s Hospital tower will begin a change toward a finished structure. The two lifts and tower will be dismantled followed by the removal of the scaffolding. The south lift was the last to be installed and the first to be removed. Until an interior elevator is in working order, the workers will use the east lift.

By early afternoon of August 6, 2019, the two lift cages had been removed from the lattice tower and the tower removed. The crane in the background is loading equipment onto the transport truck

With the safety gates and lattice tower gone some of the floors are clearly exposed. As soon as all of the scaffolding is removed the podium (the third and fourth floors) will be covered with GFRC and then the glazers will come in and set the windows.

The following day (08.07.19), the scaffolding crew began to take down the scaffold. Currently, they are removing the pipes and planking from the 10th-floor (the roof) of the Children’s Hospital Tower.
By late morning the following day, the scaffolding for the 10th-floor was gone and the crew was working on the 9-floor.
By Tuesday (August 13, 2019), the scaffolding was down.

The Fire Water Pit — Update

The steel for the shoring walls has been set in place.
By the next day, much of the dirt on the west end of the pit had been excavated.
Five days later, the pit was excavated and gravel was being leveled at subgrade (approximately 15 feet below grade).
