Floor by Floor Virtual Tours of the Dennis and Carol Troesh Medical Campus — This Blog Features the Main Entrance Canopy, the Galleria, and the First Floor

The featured image is of the large information desk that was recently set in the main lobby.

In this blog, we move from the 16th floor to the first floor and Galleria. The buildout on the first floor has reached a stage where the casual observer can tell that the project is nearing completion. This stage is very exciting as the rooms are now defined. In many areas the flooring is being laid, ceiling tiles are being installed, light fixtures are being installed, mill work (cabinets) are being installed, and the walls are being painted. When the project is completed, all non emergency patients and visitors (adults as well as children) will enter the complex on the north side. They will enter the Galleria via the main entrance canopy, which will be supported by arched columns. Both the Main Entrance Canopy and Galleria are standalone units, which are anchored to concrete caissons, that were sunk approximately 45 feet into the soil. The Galleria will be tied to the main structure via a large expansion gasket (approximately five feet wide) having multi-directional movement capabilities. Three strategically placed double doors will allow for foot traffic in and out of the main lobby.

The Main Entrance Canopy

A Side View: The first row of embeds that are anchored to the concrete caissons on which the Canopy columns will be bolted are visible as they run up the center of the image. The second row of embeds, to the right of the laborer walking, are covered with square pieces of plywood. Once the columns have been anchored to the embeds, forming for the concrete foundation will begin.

The Galleria

Three images of the Galleria elevations as of July, 2020, just prior to setting the main entrance canopy columns.
From the Main Entrance Canopy patients and visitors will enter the Galleria through the doors to be installed in the opening.

The Galleria will have a high ceiling and and few walls allows for an expansive open air feel. Chairs and furniture will delineate the various areas, which are included in the numbered sections. These areas are more defined in the images to follow.
From the Center of the Galleria Facing East: Upon entering through the sliding entrance doors to the Galleria, patients and visitors step into the entry vestibule (1) with a large glass panel to the front. Patients and visitors have two entry choices. They can take the door to the left (east), which leads to the welcome desk, children’s reception (3), the children’s lobby and play area (4), or they can take the right (west), which is out of view and leads to the entry lobby (2), the welcome desk, adult reception, and the adult lobby (3). The east corridor (5) leads to the main lobby in the hospital.
The East Corridor in the Galleria Facing South: Between the welcome desk and children’s reception to the right and the children’s lobby is the east corridor that takes the patients and visitors to the main hospital lobby. Inside the corridor and to the left is an emergency exit.

Patients and visitors have two entry choices. They can take the door to the left (east), which leads to the welcome desk, children’s reception, the children’s lobby and play area, or they can take the right (west), that leads to the entry lobby (1). Entering The First Floor From the Galleria

There are three (3) foot traffic corridors from the Galleria to the main lobby. Essentially, the East Corridor will take patients and visitors to the information desk, children’s lobby, the elevators, and restrooms, admitting and registration, and the outpatient clinic. This corridor is the closest to the public corridor that leads to the Cafeteria. The Center Corridor leads to the information desk in the center of the lobby, elevators, restrooms, admitting and registration, the public corridor to the cafeteria, and the outpatient clinic. The west Corridor is the closest to the outpatient clinic, which is to the right (west) of the information desk. The corridor also enters the main lobby from where patient, visitors an employees can reach all the first floor services including the elevators and restrooms.
The Moat (Horizontal Seismic Expansion Joint): At the present, the Galleria and the main lobby are not joined because of the moat that separates the two structures. Once the steel and concrete expansion covers are installed, I will be able to walk through each of the corridors.
The vertical seismic expansion Joint: The Galleria and the podium do not touch (horizontally and vertically) and are separated, at the minimum, by the width of the moat. The seismic expansion joint component will be covered by a decorative weather resistant material, which will expand and contract by any seismic activity.
