How do They do That? Cutting Steel In One Easy Lesson

On the west side of the building I found Mark, an Ironworker, standing at a makeshift work bench using a portable track-guided oxy-fuel cutting machine on a one-inch thick steel plating. He was cutting a 30-degree bevel on a straight line with a flame that gets up to 1,700 degrees in temperature. The following video clip gives one an idea how this operation is carried out. Notice how red the front edge of the steel gets, as the steel is trimmed observe how the bevel side turns white where the flame slices the steel. As the cut is made the steel sparks, curls, and the red-hot steel melts and drips at the cut from behind the curl to the ground. When completed, the steel plate will be welded to a column.
