The Vision 2020 Sign, The Hospitals Are Revealed *Completed*

the-augur-for-the-sign the-sign-goes-up planting-the-hospital-signIn the late summer of 2015, preliminary work was well under way. Large areas north of the Medical Center drive had been fenced off including the site where the “Mary M” apartments had stood. Even with the six-foot fence barricades, the casual onlooker could tell work had begun. There were the sounds of jackhammers, heavy equipment, and the intermittent beep, beep, beep coming from a vehicle backing up. If the windscreen had not been attached to the fence one could watch the work crews rather than imagine what they were doing. Also, Work had begun on the median of the Medical Center drive nearer to the entrance of the Medical Center. Luckily, shorter barricades allowed for a better view. One morning drivers found that half way up the drive the lanes had been realigned directing the traffic further away from the construction site. One afternoon, a small tractor with a large auger attached to a hydraulic arm arrived at the main entrance to the Medical Center. Two men appeared and began pointing measuring in an area of the median about 15-yards in from the Anderson Street. The driver positioned the tractor to a designated spot highlighted in orange and began to drill the first hole. After the two holes were dug and secured with plywood everyone left for the day. A day or two later a service truck along with a truck with a small crane on its bed arrived. Workman began to scurry around unloading poles, a panel, and other hardware. The crew began to assemble whatever they brought. All we could see was the back of a large panel lying face down on the grass. Once the two poles were attached to the back of the panel two straps hanging from the crane were lowered and attached to the poles. slowly the crane began to lift the large panel. The middle photo shows the moment of the reveal as the crane lifts the sign from the ground. As the work crew steadied the Vision 2020 sign before the crane lowered it into the ground, the enormity of the project became clear.
