Did You Know That…?

Did you know that the welder shown in this photo will use approximately 1,000 pounds of welding rods to place a proper weld around a massive box column that was bolted onto the column base rising from the structural steel base on the node below the decking. This particular column is located on the west end of the structure, and it will take the welder at least a week to complete this project.

This photo shows Jason (left) and Kenny (right) maneuvering a 75,000 pound box steel column, which was the last column to be installed on the east end. This column is on the same gridline as the box column on the west side, which is featured in this blog.

The box column before the two member sections were welded together. Compare the enlarged section of the photo to the photo below, which illustrates how the completed weld appears.

The box column after the welding job was completed. Once the weld is complete an ultrasound technology is used to inspect the welding sequences, which aids in catching and preventing costly repairs.
